I've heard there are a few ghost towns in maine and I'd really like to know where they are located.

I think it would be very interesting to take a trip to one.

If you have any information please don't hesitate to let me know.

out on Hurricane Island in Penobscot Bay, there's the remains of a long-abandoned town where thousands of stonecutters and quarrymen lived in the mid and late 1800s. Granite quarried from Hurricane can be seen in the Customs House in Old Port dist of Portland, Cathedaral of ST John the Divine in Boston and many other historic bldgs in the East. Hell, there's Hurricane granite in the Brooklyn Bridge.

Out on island now there are numerous cellar holes, a cemetery, a few old bldgs still standing (some part of old Outward Bound base) the quarry itself and piles of ancient abandoned machinery.

berry berry groovy place

need a boat to get there tho....no Subies allowed.

also a number of old settlements up north, old logging towns

been to sites on Moosehead, Mooselookmeguntic and Chesuncook lakes. not much there now, not like you find abandoned saloons with empty whiskey bottles and bullet holes in the bar or anything...mostly fallen down wood cabins or old chimneys and stuff, but on Mooselookmeguntic theres the site of an old chapel that's pretty cool.

I like this thread! theres a place by the name of skinner in the western mountains of Maine by Canada, buildings still standing and all. In the summer I look for old foundations to metal detect and dig bottle dumps. its always a blast!

Sorry, I had to change the title of this thread Nick. It seemed like more of a suggestion. "Abandon towns in Maine...Now!"

another really cool abandoned town is out on Criehaven Island near Matinicus. Used to be a year-round commmunity until the fishing industry tanked in the 1950s and 60s. Now just a few summer houses and lobstermen's shacks, nobody lives out there year round.

You can land your boat on the town beach or town dock, walk to abandoned Post Office and telephone exchange...place is unlocked, walk right in and check out the phone switchboard and PO Box pigeonholes...wonderfully spooky in a fun way. There's a old 1-room schoolhouse and evverything.

great hiking trails on old roads out to ocean side of island, it's still as wild as Maine ever gets.

I know of one near me, it was an old Tannery back at the turn of the 1900's. there are several "ghost stories" about the town and why it died out. Someone said there was a cholera outbreak and anyone who stayed died...the town was destroyed by fire..this one is partial truth...

the real reason is the Tannery which suported the town burn down and with the major employer gone, people moved back into the cities of old town bangor brewer...

I know where this place is but haven't been out there yet...its on the to do list.

Why is that?
It was on one of those top haunted places of the US. Lots and lots of old abandoned places scattered around. My girlfriend grew up in Waterboro, snd she has some friends from Shapleigh that know the area pretty well.
