Fall 2012 update: car still works somehow, so i decided to make it nicer apperance wise. gutted the interior, put in a black wrx carpet, 02 wrx seats front and rear. also putting the 02 wrx momo wheel in.

then i decided it needed some rust repair, and that lead to me going, "well, might as well repaint the car for fun" My very artistic friend adam and i went to work, and this is what we came up with:

total cost of everything to do with this car(excluding ins/reg) is under 400 dollars.

Read on for full write up on build and makeover!

so, since some idiot repainted their legacy (me) it is now way too nice to drive in the snow. I could run my beater civic, but fwd = fail and id sit and cry in my room every time it snowed if I couldn't go ken blocking in parking lots.

I happened to aquire this rotted beat up 93 impreza 1.8 awd that I swapped a 2.2 into years ago for a friend. its changed hands a few times, but I now have my 2.2 motor back at least lol

the plan was to part it out until I discovered my lack of planning on getting the legacy painted, so the impreza has to be re enlisted as a road car.

some of you that came to my drift track at my house last winter will remember the impreza as the beater car I was ripping around the track on rev limit and crashing into snowbanks. it is by far not in good condition, which makes it perfect for ripping around this winter, since I don't give a crap if it goes off the road or into a tree.

the thought of driving a n/a 100 hp car for the winter was pretty depressing so that was pretty much that and it had to be boosted. lucky I have enough junk around here to build the car on a budget of practically nothing.

the original cost before i replaced the 300k mi knocking shortblock was $47. after i swapped the block and had to buy another set of headgaskets the cost went up to just under $100

heres the parts list so far

2.2 n/a block with over 200k on it

2.5 sohc heads off a motor with holes in the case, these will lower the compression ratio.

turbo manifolds off a very smashed up LGT

vf39 with a jacked up compressor wheel I used to run on my legacy

wrx top mount intercooler, no one wants these stupid things, ive got a few to choose from

turbo legacy ecu, maf, map, and knock sensors left over from my legacy project

bosal divorced downpipe and mickey mouse 3" catback left over from Daves legacy

notched crossmember to clear up pipe with grinder and big hammer

stock wrx up pipe with annoying cat crap removed

2.2 intake manifold and throttle body off 2000 obs motor with camshaft broke in half

04 wrx hood scoop bought from friend for $20

440cc wrx injectors with 200k on them from chads bugeye project.

used act heavy duty pressure plate with stock used clutch disk

apexi afc to dial the ecu in on 440cc injectors since its expecting 370cc ones, and I don't have any top feed 370cc injectors around.

heres some pics so far, only been working on it a few hours. did the ecu wiring, and once I knew the motor would run on it, I ripped the motor out to swap the heads.

Some people spend good money to do that to their pride and joy...

Post a detailed build thread on RS25.com and you'll be the most popular guy on that forum.

I dont think its as hard/expensive to boost an n/a as people think. the goal is a reliable, quick setup for the absolute minimum money invested.

got the ej251 heads on, went with the gaskets for the heads. the 2.2 gaskets are really close to overhanging into the combustion chamber, which made me a little nervous about using them. the 2.5 gaskets are only a little bigger then the cylinder bore, and theres plenty of meat on the sleeve to make a good seal I think.

for the oil return I did the same thing ive done on the dohc heads, drill and tap a hole in the rear oil return galley. for the feed I am going to have to tap off of the oil pressure sensor. I was hoping to find a oil galley on the head to tap for pressure like the dohc heads, but there is no such port on these sohc heads. still need to go to the store and see if I can find an adapter so I cam make a hard oil line from brakeline instead of having to order a braided one.

when its done/running/reliable, I might make a write up on how to turbo your car the budget way.

brass fitting with a 3 way, one to the motor, one to sensor and one for the feed line...bet you could find it at home depot or something and then bend up some brake line...... add this to the list of things you can have done at your shop!!!! it comes in n/a but it leaves with boost

should be dumping the motor back into this pile of junk tomorrow or the next day. putting the motor together resulted in some snags, but I was able to dig deep into the meyagi parts bin and get it all put together. if it runs/lasts is still yet to be seen haha

This is pretty cool man. I am always blown away by your ability to Macgyver something boring in to something crazy, keep up the good work!

Looks like the Fozzie's engine with the big hole was useful. Glad to see it go into a great project. This makes me want to look for a winter beater to build...

haha thanks guys, the real test will be how much ken blocking it can take before something gives up the ghost!

motor is back in the car, exh is on, need a turbo water neck and a small piece of pipe to hook up the IC. had to push it back outside the other day, damn customer cars

oh and I figured up the grand total so far on the project,

$5 brass fittings for turbo feed/return

$20 04 wrx hood scoop

$19 oil and filter

I need to cut back on the spending, im almost to the $50 mark.... this is literally built out of a bunch of junk LOL
