Cheap convertibles?

My gf and I want to get a convertible this summer.  Cheaper the better since its just for fun and its our 4th car lol.  Last year we looked at Mustangs, Saabs, sunfires etc but never found anything worthwhile really.  All the Saabs seemed like total POSs... Prefer automatic.  I think maybe v6 mustang is our best option this year, those go for pretty cheap.  Any ideas?  Recommendations etc.

First gen miata. More people need to keep them maintained and on the road to keep them common even as they become classics. I will be looking at getting one in another year or so. Super simple to work on and an abundance of parts so high mileage is not that much of a concern. Just corrosion.

The Sebrings can be had really cheaply too, might go that route.  They seem to be more reliable than the saabs I guess.  Miatas are just out of price range.  That one is a perfect example, 25 year old car with 90hp for 4 grand?  no thanks

BE careful about badmouthing something you aint tried. for one thing, your hp numbers aren't' even close. a 1.6 liter Miata has about 120 hp, the 1.8s have 130+. in a 2200-pound car, that makes it pretty quick. not STI quick, but plenty of fun. Miatas aren't about raw power, they are about agility, fun, and rewarding skill @ the wheel. they are cars for drivers, not snobs. and as for reliability, I'd take a 25 year old Miata over some stupid 02 Chrysler any day!

Id be all for it if they weren't all so expensive.  I could get 2 sebrings or 4 metros for 1 miata ..

bla bla bla, something about quality over quanitity...

Conversation is almost not worth getting involved in if the thought of getting a Sebring over a Miata is as serious one.   Though it really depends on what kind of use one is going to be putting it to.   But I would look for an older BMW 3 series instead of the Sebring if that is more your speed.

Absolutely, 100% guaranteed NO.   Cheap cars are cheap for a reason.   They are crap.   We buy Subarus, and pay a little more, because they are worth it.   Saabs fall in the same category, more expensive for a reason, and usually worth it.

idk bud all the Saabs I looked at last year around 1-2k were crap.  They all ran but had a million issues.  Theres a lot of the turbo convertibles for cheap available.  I never actually looked at a Sebring though.  As far as a Miata I cant really afford one, but maybe if I watch closely I could find a good deal.

It doesn't matter what you are are looking at; cars in the 1-2k range are all crap.   This is Maine, rust is an issue across the board.   And cars that are expensive it fix generally don't get the maintenace they need (like Saab and BMW).

I would actually trust a miata to make a cross country trip. And would have a blast the whole way. My friend Mike has A Chrysler seabring convertible in his car port right now, it has not moved in months. FOR A REASON! he will sell it to you real cheap tho ;-)
