ok so here is the story, I went to a friend house in Ellsworth on Monday and left my car at his place.  We then took my friends car and biked 20 miles at Acadia national park in bar harbor.  When we got back to Ellsworth and I went to leave in my car it would turn over but not start.   The battery ended  up dying and had to jump it but still no start.  So gave up for the night and went back to it on Tuesday after work and brought my scan tool and it had set a crank rang/pref. code.  so I cleared the code and unplugged the sensor and replaced it with another one and still set the code(have herd it will set with excessive cranking).  pulled plugs and cleaned them and checked for spark.  had one cylinder with no spark so I changed the coil and still no start.  Checking timing tomorrow.  Just wondering if anyone has run into something like this.  Any help will be appreciated please and thank you.

If it has spark, pull the air filter and shoot just a little starting fluid in, if it fires up, then you'll know you're not getting fuel.

Stupid question but did it spark with the new coil?
Haven't re checked it yet. Plan to tonight and brought plug wires from home to try.

I can smell fuel when I try to start it. Could it be getting some but just not enough? Will try that after work before I do anything elts

Maybe there's too much fuel as in flooded? I remember Joe having a similar issue. Hold the gas pedal down when you start it so it keeps the injectors from firing.

I have let it sit over night thinking I might have flooded it and still acts the same. Looking like its a spark or timing issue. Still no start with starting fluid

no spark on the back to cylinders swapped on a different coil and still did the same thing

Sounds like either a ecu fail or something to do with the crank sensor like a tooth missing from the crank gear

I swapped the wires around and they worked on the font two. What make it most puzzling is the car ran great and i parked it for a few hours then it wouldn't start

Wouldn't that set a code/ why would it fire two cylinders and not the other two? It will set the crank code but only after I turn it over for an extended period of time. Going to pull cover to look anyways.

I had a wrx that did something similar cause of a broken tooth on the crank gear and I suggested the ecu cause of the oddity of the issue

Ok thanks is there any tests i can do to see if its the ecu?

We started with doing a pin out to check for resistance in all the wires but I would start by checking the timing and associated parts before you focus on the ecu

Was just going to say igniter since it's an 02 n/a. Should also check the major harness plugs/pins by the battery for corrosion, since the igniter circuit goes through there. If it's out on the back or front two cylinders it's almost always igniter related. The igniters themselves don't go bad often, but they do fail occasionally.
