Transmission price, what is the right price?

So I'm looking for a transmission for my Forester. I have an 02 L 5 speed. I'm hoping I can find a deal where I can get a limited slip rear different to go with the trans as the L model didn't come with one. I've done a little research on ebay as to gather a price range. The are all over the place, some in the $400 range to the $1200 range. Some of the higher price ones are like JDM swaps and full drive lines with axles and diff. I'm looking for what would be a good average price that anyone has come up with. Any thoughts are appreciated.

That's what I was seeing as well. There is a member here selling his drive line from an 04 WRX. If I were to go that way, I would need the whole set up. Different trans ratios and what not. The good with that is it has the limited slip rear diff. Bad part is he's asking in the $1200 range for the set up.

Yes but you need to make sure the cv's aren't the diff style cause it was either 04 or 05 I think they got rid of the female cv and went to a male ended shaft

Which your 02 forester will be a female ended shaft

I think he has a fairly new set of axles with this as well. I just need to convince my other half that this is a good idea. If swapping isn't in the cards, then a replacement trans will have to do....for now

If you get a transmission that takes male axles, go buy some male axles. It's not really a big deal. The bigger deal is most transmissions 05 and up don't have a place to put the speed sensor.

I actually did not know about the speed sensor on the newer trans. Thanks for that tip chris.

I got a complete 5 speed, s model with the LSD and good clutch for $500, it came with a body and a motor with a bent rod too! May be better off finding a whole donor car.
