BOOM!

Well...... It seems that I have lost third gear, in quite a startling manner. I was driving at about 45 and shifting into third, conserving fuel as it were, and as soon as I started accellerating there was a LOUD BANG, followed by grind grind grind.

Looks like there is no christmas for me this year, and I try my first tranny rebuild ;D

Trying to source STi RA gears atm, on nasioc.com. Anyone here happen to have any for sale?

Chris, we've torn nearly all the teeth off third gear....twice! Of course, we were running nearly 24 pounds of boost one time and hit a rock while airborne in the top of third gear. Something had to give each time.

Third gear is a weak point in the Subaru trannies.

Plenty of vendors selling RA gearsets. If it were me, I'd check with Rallispec in New Jersey or Gruppe S in Florida. I'm partial to the East Coast guys! Prices are about the same no matter where you go. Rallispec really know their stuff, being THE major importer of STi components in the US.

Are you planning on rebuilding it yourself? I've tried to scrounge up junk subaru trannies so I could teach myself how to rebuild them but not having much luck (or time). I've got lots of experience doing Saturn trannies and some others but I've never had a Subaru trans cracked open.

Got the new tranny installed and all is well so far. 450 miles.

I plan on tearing open the old tranny at some point, you interested in participating or just pics Chris?

I am interested, but don't wait for me. I was hoping some day I'd get a pile of shot trannies and a book or two to see if I could learn myself how to rebuild them. Well, I've got enough mechanical, carpentry, and construction issues right now. If I add a pile of trannies to my own mess I'd get disowned, or worse, yelled at.
