what do you use to hold onto the allen so it doesn't slip? or can you just brawn it?

got the spring compressor already, just having an impossible time with the nut. I have an allen wrench that fits the strut, but I don't have anyting to use to turn the socket while there is an allen wrench in the hole at the same time. Is a "hollow" socket (however the hell it works, I'm...

so thanks to gabe, I have WRX struts, and lowering springs...but the old top hats need to come off the old struts. I put the thing in a vice, put a nut on it...and watched the whole thing spin. Thinking I was clever, I put a vice grips on the strut shaft, and tried again...everything just spun...
