Diy: Shaping Foam Questions

That is a pretty general question.  What are you trying to do with the foam, what type of foam are you using, what tools do you have access to, ect.

I am a model maker so I have a good bit of experience with shaping, carving, molding foams.

I wanna make a housing for my GPS that will replace a empty compartment on the dash of my '06Fozzy. I have no exp & no shaping tools.

I'd like to know where an how to get started please. What find of foam should i pick up and where? What tools are best for shaving & shaping foam?

well you can use a castable foam to make your general shape, but it depends on what you have for a design and what you are trying to mount into this enclosure.  If you have pictures or anything I could help you figure out materials and tools to get you on your way.

I would do it this way:

quick setting casting plastic as the outside, then an expanding foam for rigidity.  You will need the display surround so that it can be put into the mold near the end.  and you will want/need a donor center consol plug so that everything snaps into the dash.

I would use smooth cast 320 and Foam-it! 8

both are machinable.  Sorry for the latent response, I didn't see you reply.
