Was the expulsion and criminal charging of the Bucksport HS rappers justified?

Maybe they were just lyrics to a song, but imagine if it was your kid they were talking about. I'd want them thrown in the clink. You never know which threats are real and which ones are Memorex...

 
I think they got what they deserved. It sounds like they were pretty specific as to who they were "threatening". If they had walked in to the school and said the same things, would that be different than singing the "threats"? Free speech is one thing, but you have to be careful. Both in what you say and how it is interpreted.

someone can write a song about clubbing baby seals and never club one themselves. someone can sing about shooting someone and it will never happen.

There's a difference between free speech and common sense. It would be like singing a song about blowing up an airplane as you're walking down the jetway to board. Even if you're not actually going to do it, you're sparking a reasonable amount of concern in light of recent events.
