I got my first ticket.

60 in a 35 so the cop says.

crap.

any tips or tricks?

Plead temporary insanity.

5-10 over you might have a chance, 25 over is pretty high. You could see if it was on radar, but there is a good chance it was.

Don't believe the "trick" of showing up for court and hoping for the cop not to show. They have special people who job it is to go in and respresent the cops in cases like that.

Long story short is you were speeding and were caught, so man-up and pay up.

I recently got bagged and had to pay a hefty fine, now I take it a bit slower.

show up in court on your assigned date. wait until the DAs tell you all what's up. the DAs often will bargain the ticket down a notch or 2 in return for you not fighting it and costing the county even more $$ to empty your bank account. this has worked for me and saved me many points on the license. I have gotten away with the old "hope the cop don't show up" thing a few times, but don't count on it. Nowadays in Maine they don't actually have to physically be in court, just available by phone or by brain waves or whatever...and it's the DAs who do the "contacting" so you are probably gonna get whacked anyway.

don't actually try to fight it unless you have conclusive proof you were not speeding. nothing pisses off a judge more than some line of hooey...it usually comes down to a yes-or-no question: "Were you speeding or not, yes or no?" you might not believe the cop, but if he's got you on radar, you are hosed. period. if you piss off the judge, you are gonna get the first degree and pay top dollar in return for a hard learning experience about the justice system.

good luck, with 65 in a 30 you gonna need it.

I've had luck (not in Maine) with saying 'yaah, i was speeding, can you reduce the points?' that was doing about 73 in a 55. The judge was cool, cop was cool and they reduced it down to 63 in a 55 which still made me man-up over $200, but it was a lot cheaper than the damage from the 73... I love PA and the Catastropic Loss Fund $$ additions to tickets...

+1

I plead down a exhaust ticket a few years ago, just by talking to the DA on my court date. he cut the fine in half...

and what we do fro court is send one guy w/ all of the reports to court and he deals w/ all of the hearings...

I've always done what mikebike said. I almost never paid full pop. Just don't fall for the "i'll reduce it to 16 over". See if they'll go for 15 over, that cuts your points in half. The DA is your freind in this case. Be REAL nice to everyone. I've never gotten criminal speed though. I'm always nice to the cop and they always reduce it to 29 over beacause I didn't bullshit them. Then the DA goes for the 15 over....

my first ticket was for 75 in a 40. I said i didn't realize i was going that fast(he nailed me passing someone who was doing about 30) and I thought it was a 50, but he wrote the ticket out and said my court date was the 18th if I wanted to contest it. I told him I was shipping out on the 16th for the ARMY and he told me to call the judge and ask to have it changed. LAME. I had even let hims search the LOVING car!

before i finally shipped out for iraq a couple of years ago my buddies and i rented a mustang for one last visit with our families. so we rode from fort dix NJ where we mobilized and made it to bangor in record time, doing 100+ mostly. im pretty sure it was under 9 hours or so.

luckily, we didnt see any coppers...

LMAO...bizarre!

ive heard all kinds of horror stories from guys who did basic training there years and years ago...

sadly, its just a run-down national gaurd base nowadays.

geez, dave... i dont think this is all coincidence... maybe you should have been a co-driver for me, instead of that crummy cassidy fellow, lol.

25 over you are screwed... anything else you can plea bargain down but speeding they don't reduce anymore (unless you hire a lawyer or something). Last ticket I got though I hired a lawyer and he walked me because he put the cop on the stand and made the cop pick me out of the crowd.
