There are a lot of things that would cause it to fail... Things like a brake fluid reservoir inside, etc. Also, you can only have a 2.6l engine in open light, so it's screwed there. If that car was actually built properly, caged AND LOGBOOKED, it would actually be worth 4x that price.

Does it have a CEL? I'd start by checking for codes, it may be an injector code or whatever. It will lead you to the problem. But yes, start with plugs and wires.
