It would be far better in a diff or transmission.  once you start seeing iron filings in your engine oil, you are probably on the side of the road already.

it is blocked at work, but is this the 360 passing subaru?  Because that shouldn't ever be used as a good thing.  That is the reason the WRX is a burden to insure.

If it was in the rear wheels you wouldn't feel it through the steering wheel. 

Make sure your lugnuts are tight.  also make sure that there isn't any snow or ice buildup in your wheels.

It is only going to give you slight advance notice that your engine is taking a dump. bearing material is not magnetic, iron and steel are the only things showing up and if you see that, you are hosed.
