my guess is that it is the tranny...if it was the turbo you would think you could hear it spool throughout the rev range regardless of what gear its in....i guess i'll have to do a little research on the matter....

...it's more like, you're going 70-80-90 and codriver says, "...L5 Over Crest..." and driver keeps his foot down while yelling "THEN WAHAAAT!!???"
