I haven't been watching CL for bikes lately, but if you pm me your email I would be happy to email you any bikes I see that I think are good projects for a good price.
Last year I bought and sold four or five different bikes. The best deal was this '77 CB550 that I bought for $200 and sold for $1000 after a little work.
I know the older bikes (80's and before) fairly well, but I personally only look for Honda's and Kawasaki's. The Harley's and Triumphs cost to much to buy initially and parts are worse. So I stick with jap bikes. Honda's are bullet-proof and my first bike was a Kawi, so I am partial. The only Yamaha or Suzuki I would consider buying is an XS1100, all the rest are not as good as their Honda counterparts.
There is one good source for parts and junk bikes that I know of. The bike barn, Maine Cycle Salvage in LA. It's next to Maine Oxy, behind the New England School of Metalwork. They are a bunch of crooks and I hate their guts, but if you are buying something you are familiar with, its a good source.
I'd be happy to sell you my finished project, but I don't have any bikes that need work right now. Something else has taken my focus.
