Well im pretty positive ive got a spun rod bearing in my 99 OBS so im either going to need to by a new motor or see about getting this one rebuilt if possible. My options are open so any advice would be great plus any tips on a motor for my car would be greatly appreciated.

I already asked MikeyMeyagi on here about it. He may have one, just waiting to hear back. It will be MUCH cheaper to just get another motor.

ok I called someone I know and they said they could install it for about 500 plus oil and coolant which I can buy. is that a decent price?

Meaning motor and installation? Or just the install of the motor? I dunno. Remember you should put a new timing belt, water pump, tensioner, and oil seals on the new motor before dropping it in, or you'll just end up having to do it after!!

Yeah it's very possible that Mikey would sell a motor with new stuff all on it. Installation is pretty damn easy. I mean Chris did it with 2 come alongs and VERY basic hand tools in just a couple hours. He may chime in here later. But I will get a hold of him again today too.

And honestly, I don't know the going rate on a motor install, but with the right tools, it should take like a max of 5 hours to haul out the old motor and put in the new one, and even at 50 buck an hour, that's only 250. Who gave you the 500 quote?

You say you have a 99, that means you have the phase2 engine. They're a little hard to find, and expensive when you do find them. I think Ray is trying to sell one though that just needs a cam gear or something simple like that.

I'm pretty sure you can get a phase1 block and put your pahse2 heads on it, check with someone (Mike) who knows for sure though.

That is probably your cheapest option. A 2.2 short block is pretty cheap.

I'd say just in parts you're looking at around $500+ in parts between block, head gaskets (if you go with a new shortblock), other gaskets, timing belt, hose clamps and other misc. crap that adds up.

Unless you can find a good phase2 long block, just as I said, not easy to come by.

Yet another option is do a 2.5 swap while you're at it. Phase2 (SOHC) will swap in, and those engines are plentiful. (99-04 imp/fozzy, 00-04 leg/ob) Just do the head gaskets. All you'll need is a dual port header. May as well get a borla or something while you have that apart.

All in all, engine swap is really not very hard. I did it with a little box of sockets, bag of random tools, spare tire jack, some blocks of wood, two come-alongs, elbow grease, grease in my face, and some swearing.

1. 500 to install a motor on a subaru is a bit much. I generally do motor swaps for 300 if its a simple in out deal.

2. I know of a good phase2 2.2 out of a 01 impreza at one of my friends place, I need to see what he wants for it, car its in rolled over. I do have a few good 2.2 phase1 engines that I may be talked into selling a shortblock from...

He's right. 500 install is pricey. I recommend Mike. Tons of experience plus he knows what you can and can't do with Subaru mechanicals.

Thanks for the info guys... im still a little lost when it comes to short block long block and all that stuff lol... mike has gotten some good reviews from people but sounds like its just a little far to drive that car lol... I know I could prob do it myself its just coming down to finding a motor that will work and buying it.

Short block is the motor without heads or anything, and long block is fully assembled motor

I thought long block was just the block and the heads ... no intake mani or any of that. That's what the longblock was that I just picked up.

I generally think of long block as just block and heads. If someone says a long block for sale that's all I expect unless they say a complete engine.

ok so where my motor spun a rod bearing what parts can I and cant I use? and roughly what price are we talking with just a long block and using parts from my motor to complete it.

You would really just need a SHORT block to fix it, and use your heads and intake. Then just get a head gasket set and replace all the other gaskets and seals with it. Then timing belt kit. Reassemble and drop it in.

wow sounds like a long process lol ive always said I wanted some more experience working with cars I guess ill keep my mouth shut next time haha
