Jumpy 03 Forester 5MT

My Forester has been quite jumpy within the last month or so. When rolling through traffic at slow slow speeds, I'll be in 2nd... gently pressing the gas does not result in a gentle application of power, it causes the car to jump & buck. I know, downshift... even if I downshift it still has the same result. It's only started to do this during the warmer summer months so i'm wondering if my tranny oil & rear diff oil (Redline 70w90ns) is too slippery. I replaced the sparkplugs but not the sparkplug wires, engine mods are easy: CAI w/ a K&N.

I also had a stinky clutch burning incident when getting stuck in the sand on the Outer Banks, NC.

Any ideas or suggestions? Could my clutch be on its way out?

And now the big questions... who in Portland do I have look at it? I work right around the corner from the dealer on Maine Mall Rd.... are they any good? Mod friendly?

Thanks!

Do NOT go to Maine mall motors. If you are looking for a dealer the only one i know that is any good is Exeter in NH. It's a bout a 45 min drive from Portland. There is a place called Chip's in Portland that works on subaru's and I've heard a lot of good things about them. Good luck

I just leared about Chip's today. The peeps in my office were talking about their previous Suby's and how they always took them to Chip's. They also said that there's some place off exit 8 of 295 that deals only w/ Suby's. I remember seeing it when I was driving around looking at apartments. I tend to shy away from Dealers unless i'm really in a pinch... but I think Chip's might be the ticket.

Thanks! The more i've been reading the more it seems that Patriot is the place!

As for the jumpyness...I had to run over to Manchester to pick up my wife at the airport last night and the Forester was running nicely! Gas mileage sucked something big but I was also pushing it around 75-80mph most of the way.

I think my Forester just hates short trips. My commute in teh AM is 4 miles.

Vinnie, don't take it personally, I really enjoyed my sales experience there and Adam and I talk every time I'm in there. That being said, the service department has some definite issues, I won't bash your service department here since I did in another post, but the man wanted a reccomendation.

I'll straighten out Patriot Subaru service. Tell them to call me, I'm cheap, $18/hr =no comebacks for same concerns. Associate's in Science. ASE certified 6 areas. Saturn/Honda factory trained. Electrical wizzard, transmission freak, engine guru, suspension specialist. I'm more qualified than the service manager for christs sakes.

Seriosly though, Patriot has the access to the factory's latest developing bulletins, equipment, scan and data tools, revised parts, ect ect.

Mike's clutch is probably all done, or his fuel system isn't delivering fuel smoothly. Either way if the Forester is still under warranty I'd bring it to Patriot of Exeter. Maine Mall Subaru is the devil, evil I tell ya!

I'm out of the factory warranty period (just under 33k miles now) but I have the extended warranty up to 60k. Will the Patriot Service Dept give me crap for my home made CAI or should I swap the factory airbox back in when I make an appointment?

swap it back to make sure it's not the cai that's causing the problem. if it continues to hitch bring it in.

Rad it's just not cool man. How would you feel if you started a website and forum and I bashed your company on it??? :-

Well the factory airbox is back in Pittsburgh so i'll have to wait. It seems to be running ok now... I wonder if I just had some bad gas! I know after I eat mexican food I have bad gas... but not usually in my car.

I'm going to reset the ECU too just for good measure.
