Noob question of the day

Aluminum spacer is used to eliminate the brake booster on competition vehicles for weight reduction and improved brake modulation.
Basically - removes the need for the heavy booster and gives you better, more consistent braking power.

It allows you to remove the entire brake booster unit on a rally car.

Why? Vacuum assisted brakes can be very inconsistent when left foot braking. It's not uncommon for rally team to disconnect the vacuum lines to the booster to make the brake pedal more consistent. This little gem allows you to completely remove the booster and save some weight.

If you want to feel what I'm talking about, try applying the brakes while also being on the gas. On the gas gives you little or no vacuum, so little or no brake assist. You have a very hard brake pedal as a result. Now lift off the gas and brake again. You have vacuum assist and the brakes will grab much harder for the same amount of pedal pressure. Not a big deal on the street, but try it at 90 mph on gravel while sideways - you want a VERY consistent brake pedal in those situations.
