Turbo Needed For 05 Legacy

I was at M&A in Lisbon getting my downpipe and up-pipe and it turns out my turbo is toast. The stock turbo is the vf40, they said that an 09 STI turbo would work also. I am looking for something used, as much as I would like to upgrade to a larger turbo right now, it really doesn't fit my budget. Any advice would be appreciated.

An 09 WRX turbo will work. Its an upgrade to your turbo and will require some supporting mods, but it can be done.

08 WRX turbo would work also. Its a TD04, and if you ask, its actually a tiny bit smaller. Not by much at all, but I think by design (MHI vs IHI) its just a tad bigger.

I think if you are looking for a direct sway turbo, then get the VF40. You can slap one of those in there and go (no tuning needed). Only bad thing is you're looking at buying a used turbo from an 05 LGT. 06+ used a different turbo(forgot the VF number), and the SpecB used a different one too. So a used turbo from a 5 year old car will be hard to find in decent shape with low miles.

I think if you are OK with getting a retune, a 08 wrx TD04 would work, and could be found much lighter used and for the same price. Ive seen them go for around $300. Not to mention its still a very capable stage 2 turbo, and will net you WAY more power then a blown one.

I think I found a VF46 on legacygt.com which is the specb turbo. Its brand new, the guy had bought as a spare and is upgrading his turbo so hes selling it. From what I have read the VF46 should be a direct bolt on for an 05 Legacy. You're right nate they switched turbos after 06 to the VF46, as well as switching from a catted uppipe to a catless, the catted didn't help with the longevity of the turbos. In fact I was switching my uppipe because of the possibility of it exploding and the pieces of the cat going into the turbo, which is exactly what happened to mine.

Thanks for the input.
