Helllp with dreaded Subie gas leak

OK so my RS coupe stinks now. raw fuel smell around back of car. spotted drippage on pass side of tank above the seam where the 2 halfs of tank are welded up. car does not smell (or barely smells) when tank is 2/3 full or less.

is this likely to be the dreaded fuel filler neck rust plobrem, and if so what's involved to fix?

hadda replace stock tank on my RS rally car, what a )(^^%^%#* PITA,,,so bad I just tore out old tank and installed a fuel cell instead. as I recall, had to pull exhaust, most of the rear suspension and a whole bunch of other crapola

here's hoping this is a less involved fix than I'f afeared of...........

Fuel filler neck is easy. I would pull the back seat out and pull up both covers and check for leaks around the pump.

my GF's 99 obs had the same problem when I checked the filler neck it was rotted completely in half... surprised I got fuel into the tank...

but subaru puts some dumb plastic cover over the neck in the wheel well to "protect" the neck.... more like catch salt and dirt and all the other lovely stuff maine has to offer.

I took her shield off and undercoated the whole new one. Its been that way for about a year and theres no sign of rust or rock chips at all... just my 2CENTS

I'll help you out with said fix if you need it Nigel
tanks Rad, am gonna tear out the plastic cover and do BDA probly after work today. couldn't face laying down in snow-filled driveway over the weekend.

PS--saw the ABC News piece on Hartford snafu. Glad it wasn't your voice on the CVR tapes they played....!!!

OMG that guy was killing me, All sorts of things were said over the company frequency, but he had to go and open his trap on the ATC frequency

wellp, tore into Snowball's hiney last nite, and the prob is simple but not simple....as in, it needs a gas tank, period.

leak is from upper part of tank on driver side, damn rust blisters!! fuel filler neck was packed full of crud as expected, but is basically still sound. at least now that part is cleaned out.

OMFG there's a lot of stuff that has to be torn apart to replace the tank...guess its time to re-bush rear suspension while I'm under there getting filthy...mebbe replace the rusty rear subframe and a couple exhaust hangers.

one thing for sure, lots of PB Blaster prep work is going to be required.

oh well, I really like the car and intend to keep if for another good while now, so it's off to go Subaru parts shopping and beat up the old Visa card....

PS--any hints on where to search for a suby tank? am finding it surprisingly hard online...
