the ebrake works fine? you should try jacking up the rear and lightly putting on the ebrake, then trying to spin the wheels and see if they have equal (or close to equal) braking applied to them. this happened before i did my rear brake upgrade and it was a lip of material on the inside drum...

i would make double sure of what your rear diff ratio is if you buy anything but a tranny from your exact car. subaru only has a few ratios it goes with (4.44, 4.10, 3.90 etc), but it switches them around a lot. autos' and 5spds from the same year will have different ratios, different engines...
