Bad wheel bearing?

So I've got this squeaking/metal sounding noise coming from the rear left wheel of my WRX. The noise gets louder upon braking and is most noticable when making a left turn. I'm assuming it's a bad wheel bearing? Also, I was quoted aroud $300 for a wheel bearing replacement... this seems a bit high to me? Thanks.

Ryan.

Squeeking metal sound is more likely a warped rotor rubbing on the dust plate or pads?

Wheel bearings typically have a "Whub whub whub whub" low tone to them as they're going....

I could be wrong, but that's my diagnosis.

make sure it's not just the wear indicators on brake pads telling you you're behind the maintenance 8-ball

once a wheel bearing is to the wobbly wheel stage, it's way past the wub-wub-wub noise anyway.

I had a front bearing replaced on 05 rex wag at dealer under warranty, but outside warranty work $300 sounds about right iirc

Yeah, my back passenger is going in my STi, (larger, can only buy the "set") and they're $244 each corner, so $300's probably fine.

i've bought 3 used wheel bearings from norms subaru for about $60 each shipped to my door. they come with the complete hub, ball joint, bearing and all. just unbolt what you have and bolt in the new one in an hour or two.

the first time i did it i paid $80 for the bearings itself and inner and outer seals at napa, then $10 to have the old one pressed out only to find out that it had scored the inner hub (spindle) as it wore so it was junk anyway and i needed to get the used one regardless.

so in the end, make sure the inner part, the spindle that has the lug studs on it, has a smooth surface where the bearing would mount, or just buy a used one for cheaper and do it yourself.

you'll need a 10, 12, 14, 17, 19mm, and rentable 32mm axle nut socket.
