fourth gen legacy fill tube issue

2005 LGT's suck.
Does anyone else with the fourth generation legacy (05-09?) have an issue with their fill tube? I can hardly ever just put the pump in and set it and leave it, it always clicks off like its full when I know its not.

Does anyone have any solutions? I've tried everything I can think of, sometimes pulling the nozzle out a little bit helps, but not always. It just drives me insane!

My guess would be the tank isn't venting air out like it should

That would make sense, I'll have to check on that when it's not so cold that my eyeballs freeze.

I had that issue with my legacy, and currently have that issue with my obxt. However... it only happens at ONE pump at ONE gas station *shrugs*

I had an issue similar with my 09 WRX.  The car wouldn't take gas even when it was completely empty, it'd just spit it back out.  I took it to a dealer and they had to replace some sensor.

They said it gets gummed up when you try to top off your gas tank, instead of just stopping when it automatically stops fueling the first time.  They said never ever top it off.

Hmm, my car hasn't done it in a while, but I'll have to keep that in mind. Frustrating to fill it when its pump-click-pump-click-pump-click.

feedback from another forum:

I have a 2004 Subaru forester and have been having the same issue
trying to fuel up and the tank not venting properly.  I have fixed it
once for a short time and just fixed it again the same way by removing
the solenoid valve located just to the right of the evap canister behind
the right rear wheel.  When attempting to blow through this valve it
was not letting much air in.  Gave it a tap and that freed up the
valve.  I put everything back in shot to the gas station and filled it
up like a dream.  Took it back today to show the wife what a good
provider I was and what would you know it did not work again.  When I
pulled the valve off it was stuck again.  A little rap and it was free.
I think the control system usually keeps this vent on low flow and when
you are filling it is supposed to open up to allow venting of gases
through the canister.  I also think it is in line before the canister so
removing the lines at the canister did not help you. (I tried that 1st
as well.)  If it is in the same location as mine you should see a larger
diamer 'S' shaped hose coming off of the canister and going up to a
valve with an electrical connection (this is the one you want to
check).  On the other side of the valve the hose goes up to a vent
filter which is just a large open can (I expect to keep liquid and
debris from clogging the lines as there did not appear to be any filter
material inside.  the hose after the filter then returns to the tank.  I
think if you wanted to do a quick check you could pull the hoses off at
the solenoid valve and try filling then.

To keep this from reoccuring I will be heading off to see how much a
replacement valve is going to cost me.  I am guessing I will still be
saving money avoiding the diagnostic charges and install work from the
dealer.

Thanks, Nigel! I'll have to look into that when I get it back, the car is at Mike's right now. Stupid VF-40s

My WRX hates being fueled. I have to hold the nozzle out a little bit when I'm filling it, because if I set it and lock the nozzle, it just leaks down the side of the car. If you don't put it in all the way it should vent properly. Before I got my WRX I had a Jeep that would always click off if I put the nozzle all the way in. Some cars just can't take it deep.

my 93 imp has started to do the same thing, i just pull the nozzle out a little bit and just fuel the car very slowly, it is of course a little bit of a pita but it makes sure it takes more than 5 gallons with the gauge sitting at 3/8ths
