Hi Everyone

I met two MS members, one at the DMV and one with his head inside my Sub. at a

walmart parking lot!

Both gentlemen and helpful.

I purchased from Petestop Motors, FL. a Micheal Berenis (subypal.com) 2002 WRX

with a newly finished motor and more after market parts than you can shake a

stick at.

I drove it home from Florida and have enjoyed for about 3,000 miles.

Driving to Bangor a few weeks back, I was following cars in traffic. I went to shift

from 4th to 3rd. Coming out of 3rd the stick went to the center position and would

not go into any gear. Getting it to the side of the road, I played and played with

RPMs, bumping, pushing, giggling and finally got into 1st, I took off and was able

to go right into second and then, again, all gear slots were shut off. Rolling down 1A,

I play, giggle and nudge and get it back into 1st and get to a small Rawcliffs service

station in Hampden.

There was an older mechanic working and a young guy running the pumps. They could

not have been nicer or more accommodating. When the car came to a stop, it was running

fine but would not shift. The mechanic said, after he finished his brake job, he would check

out my Sub. I put out my thumb and went to my worthless seminar in Bangor.

I left the seminar and walked back to the garage. Arriving, the young fellow tells me when

they went to start the car the starter was stuck in the ON position. They unhooked the

battery due to the racket and then unhooked the starters + lead. I get in the car and

the shifter now goes into all gears without a hitch. I have the car towed home.

I just removed the starter. The entire top cover that supports the pinion is broken off. Putting

my fingers in the hole, all I can feel is the flywheel gear; no pinion cover/support. The

pinion gear and shaft are on the starter and in good shape except for wear on the front,

top corner of the pinion gear. On the starter, where the cover "was" is jagged broken aluminum.

Great moments to that tough day, Retired Navy man gave me a ride all the way to my seminar on the other side of Bangor, Tow truck driver I rode back to Rockland with was a great guy. While waiting

for the tow; I went to "Angelos" and had one of the best Calzones I have ever had, they are at 102 Main St right across from the small Rawcliffs.

Help with ways to proceed.

Thanks

Thanks STI Chad, I hope I don't have to take you up on that. I guess I have to pull the bell housing-

transmission off, find the missing pieces of the starter, put it back together and see what

happens. Sitting, without the engine running, the car now sifts into all gears with no hesitation.

My question is, I don't believe broken starter pieces could bind the shifting? Can anyone see

where the two problems fit together?

If the broken pieces are causing the clutch to not work properly, then it could make it so that it will not shift into the gears. Really hard to tell without removing the transmission though.

Welcome to the site!

Welcome. You might see me on weekends driving through the area.

Pieces of the starter could have lodged into the shift linkage. Probably won't really know until you get it apart.

that's impossible the starter is at the front of the transmission and the shift linkage is at the back. possibly could have broken a shift fork

If the transmission shifts fine with the engine off, the transmission is probably fine. That would mean for some reason the clutch isn't disengaging properly. Clutch fork, hydraulic line, or pressure plate issue. Just to name a few.

I'm the guy you met at the DMV, cool to see you've joined up!

Thanks to all. The scenario may be so strange. Starter disintegrates (why) but everything is still

ok, then some of the pieces start to rattle down and fall in the flywheel bell housing(?)

The clutch seemed no different but some pieces jam something so the car will not shift.

Then, after I leave the car, the mechanic turns the key and due to the starter shaft imbalance, the starter shorts into "always on". They rolled the car around their lot, the piece moves in the housing

and I can mover the stick again?

I will let everyone know what I find.

This kind of things happen. You'll have one problem, then something completely unrelated breaks and causes more problems at the same time. Problems just compound sometimes, and it sucks.

You need to have it looked at by a subaru mechanic, not Joe Chevrolet who works at Bob's Supreme Ripoff shop.
