Is my turbo on it's way out?

A couple of weeks ago I started getting a faint scent of gas in my car, but it only happened sometimes at stoplights, if I was driving I could rarely smell a thing and never suffered any headaches or anything from it. Today, I noticed that as soon as I start building up boost I hear a wooshing noise, that's even worse when the boost goes back down. It also seems to be dumping boost faster than normal (although that could be in my head). I'm just running the stock VF40 and it's a 5EAT. I don't believe the turbo has ever been replaced and the car has about 140k on it right now.

I know someone is probably going to confirm my worst fears, and say I need a new turbo, but hopefully I'm wrong.

Well you do have a LGT so it's more than likely.

sounds like a boost leak but more dio would be needed to determine
