Got pulled over and told my exhaust was illegal. I currently have two ebay cans welded on in place of the stockers (I couldest justify spending 600 or so dollars on a catback, when I wouldent gain any performance. Still wanting to hear what I drive I resorted to the ebay cabbage)

I asked the sheriff to see the lawbook so I could read the law myself, and he agreed. Basically it states any modification done to the exhaust of the vehicle, when the result os the amplification of noise is illegal. So obviously my setup is tossed in that category.

NOW, I have a few questions.. not wanting to pay anymore damn tickets for stuff I've done to my car, naturally im considering changing my exhaust. I got rid of the stock suitcases awhile ago and I definitely don't want to pay stealership price for two more. What I was thinking is cut my exhaust off right before the resonator, weld in some flowmaster that's 1 inlet and 2 outlet, and run 2.5 inch pipes out the stock bumper tip cutouts or whatever.

Question #1 anyone know how that would sound?

Question #2 would that be considered a modification to achieve a louder dB? I could argue it was a repair, and I didn't feel like buying two mufflers. Whereas that argument wouldent hold water with cans.

I meant cannage* not cabbage Haha.

Ans I got pulled over in gray.

ive only been stopped by the state police....local law never bothers me.... dont forget the 96 db leveL!!!!! I have a flowmaster for a muffler, also 2.5 catback with a glasspack welded in for a resonator....borla header and I like the sound very much. I can feather the throttle and make it very quiet or lay into it abd scare old ladies.

I live in gray too and the cops here never bother me. Ive been pulled over about ten times in my car which has a turbo back with the biggest exhaust tip you can get, and ive only recieved comments on the exhaust sounded (good comments) NEVER been hassled for it. I usually get let off for speeding most of the time. Keep your car nice and sounding good and you probably wont get hassled. I also think its entirley worth investing in a nice exhaust system if you cant find one used for a good price and condition. I think the pos are targeting hondas with fart cans as they should.

^^or a metro no wait that was me hahaha ya I always get stopped in Gray for noise

Lyons: I knew I know your car. I've brought my buddy alex up to your place a few times, real clean car man im Jelous. You going on the oct. Drive?

Haha word do you work at cole farms with him? Must not of had that at the time or id have def checked it out.

Ill go on the group drive if its after mknday the 17th I currently have a suspened license for criminal speed.

the exhaust law states...

1. Muffler required. A person may not operate a motor vehicle unless that vehicle is equipped

with an adequate muffler properly maintained to prevent excessive or unusual noise. For purposes of this

subsection, “excessive or unusual noise” includes motor noise emitted by a motor vehicle that is

noticeably louder than similar vehicles in the environment.

3. Amplification prohibited. A person may not operate a motor vehicle with an exhaust

system that has been modified to amplify when the result of that modification is the amplification or

increase the of noise emitted by the motor above that emitted by the muffler originally installed on the

vehicle.

so petty much if your car sounds louder then surrounding cars its "illigal" but I have a 3inch TBE also w no cats and a 4 inch tip that extends another inch out of the car! I haven't had much trouble yet. but im pretty carful with it. I never get on it when im by a cop. easy fix, ive had to drive right by cops at intersections and lights, haven't had any problems yet.( knock on wood) and when your w a group of us we all sound loud and there for are not illigal acording to the first law.

If you look around though, I think its under inspection, there is a caveat to that rule that applies to cars and not motorcycles IIRC. It talks about getting the car inspected at an inspection station that can measure the volume of the exhaust in decibles. If I can find it I will update this post.

Here is what I have always thought made the exhause law not apply to us if we pay for it:

http://www.mainelegislature.org/legis/statutes/29-a/title29-Asec1912.html

What it says is:

6. Exception. Subsections 1 and 3 do not apply to a muffler or exhaust system that does not emit noise in excess of 95 decibels as measured in accordance with standards and specifications outlined in standard J-1169 adopted by the Society of Automotive Engineers in May 1998. A person served with a Violation Summons and Complaint charging a violation of subsection 1 or 3 must provide satisfactory evidence that the muffler or exhaust system does not emit a noise in excess of 95 decibels as measured in accordance with standards and specifications outlined in standard J-1169 adopted by the Society of Automotive Engineers in May 1998. Measurements must be made by participating certified inspection stations.

This subsection applies to motor vehicles as defined in section 101, subsection 42, except that it does not apply to motorcycles.

Just saying, its not an absolute law when it comes to cars, just motorcycles is my understanding.

you have to pay for that test and there's only a handful of shops in maine that do that.....

as long as you are being responsible and not being an asshat, then you will be fine.
There's the key to not being pulled over! Drive nice and you won't get pulled over. My legacy is 3in catless turboback and I have never been pulled over it. In fact, I've never been pulled over in that car, ever!

you just dont look dangerous driving that legacy

Bump.

Anyone have an idea how that would sound?

(Resonator delete, single flowmaster welded in 1 inlet 2 outlet, 2.5in pipe exiting stock location)

As others have said, this has been covered quite a bit.

Exception 6 says it can be up to 95dB, and if taken to court, this must be proven.

Don't be a dummy like I was... I went in for mine, thinking that since the cop didn't even know it was a flippin' law, that the whole court date would be null and void... nope, they just sided with the cop, and even he said "I didn't know that was a law." they pulled a while you're here, lets force you to prove it anyways scenario.

Just print off that page iboc provided, go find a dB station and bring those to court with you.

I didnt get cited luckily. But I did do my reading on all these laws and I got all that that straightened out in my head.

what ive gathered is if you just putt around town without getting on it to high they wont bother you. my truck is loud and I never get on it and cops never look my way.
