I won't jump the gun and say exactly what I think caused it, but here's the scoop:

Trans lost most (if not all) of its fluid, and started smoking... doesn't even have enough to get moving.

I don't know WHERE it leaked out from (10pm isn't the greatest lighting and all... :BangHead:) so I'll try to find out more.

Trans could be:

Cracked

Have a leaky pan

What else?

I had the axles re-booted when the engine work was done - can improper axle installation result in lost fluid?

There's one more key possibility, but I won't open that up until I know for sure... don't want to be held liable for bad press.

This just happened to someone i know. Couldn't even move the car. Filled up the fluid and fixed the leak and he says it's working fine! :happy3:

 
I'm hoping it didn't run dry for too long...

I'm assuming a dry transmission, while car is running is a very bad thing for the trans? :icon_scratch:

 
fill up de slushbox, wipe incident from your mind, drive as normal. it'll be fine. but be sure to drain out remnants of cooked fluid first, tho...it'll be dark brown in color, and stink like burnt almonds. Pleez dont ax me how I know this... :BangHead:

 
yes

auto trans is basically 2 sets of turbine blades, one set connected to crankshaft spins, heats up the fluid, it gets more viscous and xfers drive from one turbine to the other which runs the driveshafts. if low on fluide, they just spin more and xfer less energy...part of the loss comes in overheated fluid. 10 miles is not enough to cook things too bad. car must have felt weird from the get-go.

 
No, did not feel wierd when I picked it up. I have a feeling a line busted or something. It appears the fluid was lost very quickly, and not over time.

Leaving right now to figure out how bad the leak is. Wish me luck!

 
Okay, the the transmission is not leaking - externally.

Facts:

When the vehicle was picked up by the flatbed tow truck at Exeter Subaru, the car remained in Park while hauled onto the truck.

Same goes for when it was removed from the truck - angle of flatbed was increased and a jerking motion was used to unload the vehicle from the truck.

When we opened the hood, trans was suspended in mid-air because of the tension.

Against better judgement, engine swap proceeded.

Oil from the transmission is now in the front differential. The differential is leaking the AT and the Gear Oil out of the filler/dipstick tube. My guess is that all of the AT fluid made it's way through there.

Possible theories:

Seperator plate is cracked/has a hole, therefor all pressure is escaping through the diff (path of least resistance)

OR

The sleeve which carries AT Fluid to the Torque Converter is fractured, allowing the Fluid to escape into the diff.

OR

When the Torque Converter was removed at Exeter, fluid spilled so they "topped off" what "the new guy thought" was the AT Filler tube, thereby introducing AT Fluid into the diff - still does not explain how the AT lost ALL fluid though.

Wow. I cannot believe this headache. I'm about ready to scrap this damn thing altogether... and I would except I have about $2500 invested in repairs already!

 
sounds like you need to have a chat with the service manager, stat. anything YOU try to do now to repair or replace things just complicates negotiation with shop that actually did the work.

But on the positive side, vinyl business has totally rocked. Something from Peter... something something Paul? :happy3:

Diagnosed!

Engine was re-installed improperly and "crushed" the trans seals between the Torque Converter and Gearbox. Install was done by a few dudes in a garage...

Looks like I'm going to get raped. Again.

 
mass has some pretty crazy private-sale used car laws. you may be able to have the seller rectify this if you're still within the timeframe the law allows. might be worth a bit of research...

 
was this a personal garage or a professional garage?

cause if this is a "shop" they are liable for being stupid and breaking things.

 
Personal Garage - two guys from rs25 - local to me. One of the guys was a Subaru Tech.

I dunno what to think or do right now. My head is spinning. :icon_scratch:

 
Eek - that's precisely the reason that Best Buy expressly forbids their install guys from doing any work "off the clock." If they botched an install, could still be liable.

Did they do the work for you or for previous owner. If for you, did you pay them?
