Well, I'm boned

T'would appear the center diff kerploded. Both my regular guy in town, and the place I bought the car from said it's just as cheap to put a "new" (I'm assuming rebuild) tranny in it instead of dropping it and trying to diagnose and repair the diff.

Ah that sux...or... it is an opportunity
Unfortunately, no. I'm in house-buying mode right now, and the fix is coming out of those funds. And while an STi 6-speed would be tempting, it's a "get it fixed as cheap as possible" situation.

Plan right now is to take it to a buddy in Pittsfield tomorrow. He's a Chevy mechanic, and does trannys on the side. I just talked to him, and he said he will cut me a deal on pulling the tranny, cracking it open, and see what most-likely-cheap-part needs replacing. I have the SVX to fall back on, so he could take a month with it for all i care.

AND, I just found out I now have 3 weeks of vacation a year, AND they're making a new "A Boy and his Blob". So things are looking up!

:BangHead: Dang dude.

Have him look at the side bearings on the diff. And look at the shaft that has the pinion. It may have slid forward or backward out of position, like the shim collapsed or there is a needle bearing near the nut end that seems to disappear (gets ground up and spit off the shaft essencially making the 'stack' shorter) on older trannies. The "stack' of that shaft is critical.

He took it for a ride tonight after work. About 17secs after taking off, he says "throwback bearing", then mentions something about me fixing his laptop. He's going to start tearing into it this weekend. Think I dodged a bullet on this one.

throw out?

Why didn't the first guy realize that? Man-0-man that would be a lot better than a trans!

Yeah, that. See, this is why I fix laptops and not cars.

I don't know why he didn't get that in the first place. Steve (the guy doing my work) said it might not be the throwout, just his first guess.

a throw out bearing is NOTHING!! well its a ton of work to get to, but the same as doing a clutch and WAY less then cracking a transmission!
