Azenis Vs. Star Specs

Has anybody had the opportunity to run both the Falken Azenis RT-615 and the Dunlop Sport Direzza Z1 Star Specs?

Either on the street or as strictly autox tires. I am looking at them as dedicated autoxers.

I know that both tires are really good but all you hear is that they are both grea, not that one is better than the other. Not things like "I tried both and got a half a second with the X tires". It seems that when somebody tries one they seem to stick to it.

Almost every place I can find, the Azenis' are cheaper but I am a little hesitant because I REALLY hate how the Falkens I have now are wearing (the ZE-512's have a really bad rep). I realize longevity is not exactly a concern but for $15 a tire (Discount Tire Direct) is it worth it to go with the Dunlops.

While we are at it, has anyone else had experience with Discount Tire Direct?

 
comparing those 2 tires is kind of like arguing 'which is faster, STI or Evo?'

both get the job done big time, but still the faster driver > "bettAr" equipment

Discount Tire always has got my orders handled no prob, same with Tire Rack. TR carries the star specs but not the Falcoons.

 
From my research the star specs seem like the winner to me. that's what I will be going with.

I ran an autox with those piece of ***t tires. I have not tried to many tires but i can say with confidence that those are the worse tires. 2point5RS_Dans blizzak's handled better then the re-92, so I agree with Jimbo, they are a piece of ***t;)

 
true enough, but if you wanna heroically slide around on tarmac, you just can't beat the RE92s ('cept mebbe with bare steel rims

I know the asterisks hide the exact phrase I used, but I'm actually IMPRESSED with how they've held up. I mean, I know there's better stuff on the market if you're specifically looking for auto-x or snow tires. However, for tires that have taken me through two years and then two auto-x's at the end of their life, I can't complain

As for the topic, I've heard a lot of good about the Star Specs, yet I know zero about Falken.

I run Bridgestone RE01's at the moment so I'm useless when it comes to first hand experience, although I am curious about their replacement, the RE11's....

 
I run both tires in all conditions and in auto-x's. The Dunlop is worth the extra $60 per set, heck they'd be worth a couple hundred extra. They're that much better.

Azenis cons over star specs: Louder, they get very greasy when hot, they have so-so to poor hydroplane resistance.

When it comes down to it they're not really in the same tier tire. Azenis are a tier back, B-Stone R-01R (or 11's this year), Neovas, XS, and 1R1s are in the same tier.

I'll get at least a full season of auto-x and two full summers out of my dunlops. That's quite impressive.

yeah falkens have passes their prime. they were the tire to beat a few years back but now there are many choices what blow them away. Falkens are still good tires and if you rotate them regularly (unlike me) they wear like iron. But you will not get the time you can get out of the star specs. If i was still running my integra in ST i would have a new set of star specs on it right now espesial considering they are actualy cheaper then the Falkens in my size :-)

It would be interesting to see what would happen if we swapped tires for an event. Maybe the test and tune would be a good chance for that. I wouldn't mind running my 512's all season if they wore a little (ok a lot) better, but I just don't want to have to buy street sneeks at the end of the season as well as a set of ax'ers for next season. And I don't want to run the r-comps I got from Brighton until I know how to drive.

 
I mean I am not going lie, they did hold up alright till I got a major gash in the front one and had to replace them. They did to all alright when I first got my car, and was learning the boundaries of it, but once I started to push the envelope and drive me car harder, they showed their flaws. The major problem I had was that in hard cornering the side walls would just fold under themselves, which is to be expected due to it being a passenger tire; so basically I mean that it is an alright tires for normal driving, but any hard driving - for me it failed. And for the autox reference I maid earlier, they got so feathered and shredded; that is what made me hate them, cause I really did not even drive the car that hard, due to the fact that is was still new. BUT I am not trying to start a dueling tire debate, just clarifying

now we find out you probly aren't going to do anything since you have what sounds like OK tires for DD and occasional AX, plus you already HAVE a set of R comps? if you wanna AX seriously, why not use those.

You are absolutely right and I thank everybody for chiming in. If nothing else it is good to have this kind of info out there for everybody to refer back to (and yes I do know where the search button is). On bigger boards (nasioc) it is really hard to comb through the ***** to find valid information and opinions, not people spouting off (and you don't know if they even know what they are talking about). In this lovely family we don't seem to have as bad an issue with that. I don't know about anybody else, but I tend to give you guys a little bit more credit than the clowns on Nasioc.

I have purchased a set of the Azenis tires and I am hoping to have them ready to run at the next event. Whether I run them at Pole Dancing or wait to try them out at the test and tune, I haven't decided. It may depend on when they arrive.

The set I have is used and I think I will be lucky to get a full season out of them. Being a novice ax'er, and give the fact that race tires tend to cover up a drivers lack of talent/ability, I am not going to run them this year at least. I am going to be doing an ADSS with the BWM club on July 25 and an Autocross training on Aug 1. With that and the rest of this year of autocross, I should have the skills to get the most benefit out of the R-Comps next year and I won't be toasting them just for the fun of it.

I believe in having a plan as well setting myself up correctly for the maximum benefits later. Which is why I am also actively looking for a set of snow tires for this winter. When the right thing shows up, I jump on them. Even if things change I can still sell the stuff I don't end up using.

People might give you crap about whats bolded, but I think that's a good call and agree with you. You don't daily drive R-Comps, so when that car pulls out infront of you, you shouldn't expect your car to move like it's on R-Comp. Theres a lot you can learn about driving when you drive stock, even on the RE92's that I love to diss.
