Clunk Under Accel

My car has begun to make this loud clunk a few times around 2k-2250 rpm. A few people thought it might be the inboard joint on a cv-shaft but that wasn't it. After replacing the cv-shaft it wasn't as loud. Could it be something else like a ball joint or control arm bushing or is it the HLAs or piston slap?

well, you have FWD so it's probably not the typical rear subframe clunk so common to older AWD scoobs!

if the clunk comes when hitting bumps, look for pooched swaybar link bushings

My brothers 2.5RS does that, but his comes from the mounting strap on the intake being loosened up. It makes a light clunk, dunk, clunk. Ussually happens at low Idle though.

If it only happens once as you accelerate, or as you accelerate then again as you decelerate, then its a bushing, ball joint, motor mount or transmission mount I would say. If it does it continuously at that RPM then it may be the engine, but I would think that you could tell the difference, engine noises sound deeper and more suppressed. If its a bushing, sometimes you can feel it in the car.

It is only under acceleration and not while in neutral. So my theory of piston slap or spun bearing are almost void. Clutch springs?

Sometimes it is soft others it is very noticeable.

I noticed today that it happens till atleast 3500. I don't hear it under decel but I do notice as soon as I push the clutch in it goes away.

try tapping brakes while under accel and see if the clunk changes. if brakes affect the noise, it's likely to be axle related.

if brakes dont affect noise, clutch is suspect

No change noticed while hitting the brakes then again I'm not the best at gas and brake at the same time. The noise comes and goes sort of. I am wondering if under certain conditions a spring could be knocked out of alignment or something. Is that possible?

LOL, maybe MS should declare a moratorium at trying to diagnose mech probs by sounds verbally described online

....is it chunka-chunka-chunka, or klop-klop-klop or wonka-wonka-wonka ??? !!!

Well after some replies on other forums and talking to a few people it could be a motor mount. What's the easiest way to check them? And replace them?

(null)

Start the car and rev it up while someone watches the motor. If its bad you'll know it!!!

No, just unbolt the mounts from the bottom, jack the motor, or use hoist, then unbolt the mount(s) from the motor.
