My first Rex.

Okay guys,

This is my first official post on this site. Finally, after five years of envious tire kicking, I bought my first WRX from Evergreen Subaru. I went for the 2009 four-door sedan. Got to say, I'm completely blown away by this car! It's my daily driver, so I'm not looking at doing a whole lot of modding. (Got to keep the warranty, you know

) But, I'm looking for some ideas about some "enhancements" to undertake.

I read the Car and Driver article "5 Ways to Get More Power..." and right now I'm thinking my first enhancement will be a K&N short ram intake (Typhoon kit w/o the cold air add-ons). I've been doing a little light reading on the site here, and all the feedback seems to say that with an intake should come a tune. However, the article didn't even mention it. Thoughts? I'm looking forward to any and all feedback, and I'm proud to be a new WRX owner!

Thanks a lot!!

Congrads on your new car. Evergreen will take care of you all the way too.

An intake is a good first choice, and from there the sky is the limit. As for a tune, it isn't a requirement, but for the money, you will probly get a grin outta it.

Welcome to the site! And join us come oct, for our big club drive!

Welcome. From what I've read the airbox in your car flows VERY well from the factory. Supposedly there's no need for a typhoon kit, just drop in a K&N filter...you'll notice a difference with just that (and you'll save a chunk of $$).

Then reflash the computer with an xpt stage 1 map. You'll LOVE that!!!

Skip the intake and use the money for a stg 1 reflash + k&n filter.
+ 1000

just did it to myne and amazng results for under 150 bucks. no need for aftermarket intake. by the way doing anymodding will void the warrnty but pm me and i can explain

by the way doing anymodding will void the warrnty
this is a false statement. i do understand the thought process behind this, but its not something to be running for the high hills about.

understand that the dealership, and subaru as a company (as well as all other car companies) will need to be able to prove that your "modification" is what cause the issue. then and only then can the decline a warrenty claim. so an intake IS NOT going to make them decline to fix the heater that's not working, or you door that might not close right.

it may on the other hand cause them to stray away from wanting to replace the motor you blew up. its just give them a "scape goat" to pin the issues on. just as it would be for them to pin a suspension issue on the new sway bars you bolt on. it all has to be relative.

but to generalize and say if you modify you car, they will void your warrenty is WRONG.

now, again welcome to the club, and im sure we all have info here for you. as for the intake: if you plan on later on down the road going stage 2 or better and intake isn't a bad thing. the gains you will get from it now (stock) will be small, but later on down the road with other mods will be more pronounced. if you're going to get it eventually anyway, go ahead and buy it now. it just might not be where i would start. i would stage one tune it stock (no filter is needed, but doesn't hurt) and save you pennies for a catback exhaust.

mod within your budget. i happened to get a downpipe quite quickly so i went straight to stage 2, i didnt waste my time/money on a stage one tune. but def stage 1 tune if you plan on taking it a little slower, and not getting a downpipe right off.

just be warned that an intake is going to make lots of turbo noises you might not be expecting. if you are looking to keep you car on the down low, and keep it daily driver/quite. things like intake and exhaust work might not be for you. its all in what you want from your car.

Please do not get a short ram K&N HOT air intake. Your stock air box is better then anything else offered out there. Just get the K&N drop in panel filter or the Perrin panel filter.

welcome! and x2 on K&N panel filter.

take the money you'd blow on the typhoon and get a stage1 flash and panel filter

I love my typhoon, but I got an insane deal on it!!! But I saw awesome results, and a great sound as well!!

supercharged ls1 swap first....

jk

drop in... tbe...flash stage2... All you need to do for a sick daily driver dont waist your time on the short ram its a good way to ruin your car without tune...

Thanks for the info all! Looking like the K&N drop-in for this guy. Forgot to mention in my first post that I already got the short shift in there

. My goal is nothing more than to make this beast a daily driver with a little more attitude. Though I have to admit, that stage 1 flash is sounding awful good about now. We'll see what happens, I guess.

Cheers!
