sputters till it dies

i got a 99 Impreza wagon 2.2 auto and as ive stated above it'll start then rev to about 2 grand then drop back to normal idle then sit there and sputter till it dies. when ever i try an give it gas it immediately dies out :crybaby2: so i thought it was the fuel filter so i changed that and its still doing it anyone got any tips?

haven't checked the vacuum lines or the iac. to be honest not sure where there located anyone care to share?

hmm IAC might be on the top of the throttle body, that's where it is on mine. its about the size of a film canister and has an electrical plug. vacuum lines would be any 1/8" line around the intake manifold that's broken off or has a small crank in it from age (leaking air in).
