Turbo gone?

I have an 02 wrx with about 190k on it, i'm using a k&n drop in filter, gimmick turbo inlet(the stock one broke), gutted downpipe, and catless up pipe, and until a few days ago I was running stainless wrapped headers. I have a stage II xpt tune, which did not call for the headers or turbo inlet, but I researched the turbo inlet, and people said it didn't NEED a tune. I ran this set up all last fall and through the winter, but decided that I might be better off with a stock exhaust manifold instead of the headers. So I switched back to the manifold, and two days later my turbo started making this horrible sound while building boost. I took it back to my shop right away, and took the turbo out. The compressor turbine is rubbing just the slightest bit against the housing. Anyways, I have another turbo on the way, but I want to make sure I don't just wreck this one. Any input on how and why This happened? Thanks guys.

possible that it died of old age. however, for the turbine to be contacting the housing, there must have been some bearing damage. perhaps it wasn't getting sufficient oil?

That's what I thought too. When I took the oil lines off there wasn't any oil drip, but when I took the turbo apart it seemed to be oiled well. There was also some oxidization build up, or carbon, on the housing by the turbine.
