Any other fishermen up here? Anyone get into any stripers yet? I just got up yesterday, and I'm wondering if anyone has had any success. They should be coming up right about now but the water temp hasn't quite been there.

I'm in the ogunquit/wells area btw.

still bloody effin early up here for stripers.

i was out in my boat off Camden just this morning (a photo shoot, not fishing) but got soaked in the rain and I tellya that bay is still plenty cold.

my buddy Russell is a guide on the kennebec, he says bass are gonna be late this year. big pulse of fresh water coming in from rivers...from snowpack runoff and flooding...he says this will keep the slainity down, so herring and mackerel won't be here early as usual. no macs in penobscot bay that I've heard of yet, they don't arrive in force until mid-june some years

some of the tidal rivers like St George and sheepscot will hold small populations of schoolies that over-winter, but haven't been on the ST Geo yet to check it out this year.

 
Mid June for Harpswell area. I work on the wharf in Cundy's Harbor and we usually get schoolies going up New Meadows river to feed. Usually there's plenty, but last year we only had a 2 week spell when we were numbing them and then blues came in and ended the party. Though I heard rumors that ppl were getting some good size ones down on Bailey Island/Freeport area.

I give it another 2 weeks at least. Plus there's plenty of feed out there, so it looks like it's gonna be a challeging year

The ol' local fisherman usually points to these certain trees and when they bloom, the stripers come. The blooms are coming off now, and I know it's been cold. From what I hear you guys have had a rough winter, it wasn't nearly as bad down in NJ. I just wanted to prod stm for some info to see if anyone has had any luck. We could turn this into the 2008 striper discussion. We have a family friend who takes tourists out of Wells Harbor down here too.

I mainly use storm shads, needlefish, and poppers and do pretty well with them. Last year was not a good year for stripers, but the year before I did very well.

Redline glad to see things are still going well, how is redline jr? I'll be around till early August. I'll try to make it out to a function, only problem is my days off from the restaurant are usually mon-tues and there are few meets in that time span, or I'm beat from working 50+hours in 5 days.

wally world often stocks Atom poppers. better saltwater tackle places will, too.

my other fave is Stan Gibbs Pencil Popper. when the bass are hitting, they go goo-goo over these things. you have to use single rear hooks on em in Kennebec waters, so sometime the bass have to smack the lure several times to get a good hold of it (or vise versa). Gibbs lures are hard to find outside of specialty tackle shops, but they're worth the hunt. Gibbs has a big swimmer called the Polaris that's murder on big bass at night, fisihng right in the wash of the surf. it's pretty exciting to have a 20-pounder grab the lure like 2 secs before you're ready to hoist it out of the water and cast again. YOWIE!

Blues aren't shy about hitting pencil poppers, too, they rarely have a hard time getting ahold of anythings. one of my old pencil poppers is chewed down to mostly bare wood. last fall me and my dad were fishing Nauset Inlet down on the Cape, we were getting big blues (10--12 lbs) almost every cast, it was like catching mackerel. except the macs don't wear out your back and arms like the big choppers! we finally quit while the blues were still hitting, we were exhausted.

 
Yeah that is a nice fish, my biggest last year was 38, the year before 46. I have a friend at my work that is a hardcore night fishermen, and he does VERY well but he keeps logs and all. I usually just catch the incoming and outgoing tides during the day after work. I can't do that whole midnight-2 am thing, when I have to be at work by 6 or 630.

I go out for Cod with my Grandfather once or twice a year, we usually bring home about 50lbs of filets between the two of us. Anyone looking for a charter I highly recommend Captain Satch and Sons out of Wells Harbor. Smaller boats that only take out 6-8 people. Be ready for along day of jigging though.

 
been tryin the fresh water thing up here in Gorham / Standish area.. been three times already & caught nothing! :crybaby2: :BangHead:

Try Kinami Flashers with a 00 or 000 hook, 'watermellon black flake' or 'green pumkin black flake'

Throw it anywhere there is a sudden depth change. Move it just enough to keep it out of the weeds and off the bottom, a slow jig. Bass will hit all day long.

I used to cod fish a ton when I was younger, 1980s. I loved it. Haven't been in a long time. I got a bunch of Mackerel and cod jigs at Beans last summer but haven't even unwrapped them yet.

 
largemouth bass up here has to be pretty tiny with the long hard winters..? The key to them are rubber worms during the day and then surface stuff within an hour of sunrise and sunset. It's one of the best experiences in fishing working a jitter bug and then having a huge bass explode out of the water after it. I usually only fished surface stuff, even in the day. I didn't care if they weren't effective, it would pay off.

Small frog replicas with anti-weed on the hook, flip them off the lillies and pull them through it all

jitter bugs, just tug in slowly

popping plugs, toss in pop once let it sit, then pop it back in (try single bodies, and jointed ones with tails)

that's my input on fresh water bass :thumbsup:

Memorial Day Weekend Midcoast Fishin Reeport:

sunday, trolling for macks in Camden Harbor...2 hours, zippo. Still early for em, tho.

monday, trolling for whatever in Megunticook Lake: trolling streamers produced one rainbow that was smaller than most of my striper plugs.

 
Yesterday I did some surf fishing before the afternoon high tide. I was bored, and figured I might as well give it a try. In the Wells area, I got exercise (casted) for about an hour in various spots before giving up. Not a bite. Water temps are just too low for stripers. Water got up to 51 here two days ago, and I was optimistic but since then has dipped down to 48-49 and that definitely is not striper category.

Friend who runs the charter has caught some mackeral, but nothing else along shore. Off shore reports have been real good lately.

Just wanted to amend earlier post about the "rainbow smaller than my striper lure" so that no disrespect to the trout was implied

that fish might have been small, but he grabbed a fly that looked like a smelt, right off the mouth of a nice little smelt stream...just doing his trout job, I'd say. he smacked the fly like a bigger fish than he really was. glad that I am not a smelt -- I'd a been scared sheetless of him!

beautiful fish-- hooked jaw full of teeth, big wide tail. he was about 27 different colors

anyway, he's still out there hunting smelts.
